In the Shadow of the Cross By: Kim Garcia
In the caged city of Eladore where magic filled the hearts of everyone, five teenagers never knew what would befall then and how Cruxshadows would bind them. Little did Thorn and Cery know that two of their favorite musicians lived in a black house in the center of Eladore. Darkwave goth rock will help the alone, the prisoners, the dying, and the scared. Electric violin, guitar, keyboard, and striking lyrics will bind five helpless teens together and help then find themselves. In the end, a happy ending will come for all. Down in a normal town on a normal street on a normal corner was a very strange house with a few very strange people. There was smart and quiet Fayeleigh, who could read any book play any instrument but never have a friend of her own. Her hair was a dark purple majestic and magykal. Her body was small, short and thin, highly underweight. She always wore very outrageous clothing which made her stand out a lot. She was only 15 but was far to intelligent for her own good which along with her clothing, hair, and music made her stand out even more. There is Fayeleigh's brother Rogue who is outgoing and loving. The first thing you notice about Rogue is his hair, adjectives for his hair have often been pointy, sharp, and pretty, he’s thin and pale but not as thin and pale as Fayeleigh. Rogue is 16 and has taken on the job of caring for his two sisters and loves them both very much. After their mother ran away from them he never once though of leaving his sisters and will do anything to protect them. Annabelle is a small little polite 14 year-old girl just trying to find herself in the world. She has long-ish dark brown hair and is also thin and pale. Annabelle is often found outside with her older sister and brother contact juggling or reading. She is right between Rogue and Fayeleigh as she is not to loud nor as quiet as Faye. She has bright green eyes unlike her brother and sister purple eyes but has amazing beauty. She was devastated when her mother left but is very attached to rogue and fayeleigh she feels they are better that way. The three siblings sat outside on the front lawn which was a pale green and overflowing with flowers that Faye and Anna had put in. Rogue sat crossed legged wearing a pair of baggy black pants with chains and a sleeveless black tee shirt and a black and white striped mesh shirt, reading Edgar Allan Poe. Leaning against him was Annabelle wearing a black knee shirt with jagged ripped at the bottom and a red tank top reading Macbeth but her eyes were half closed as rogue kept poking her to keep her awake. Fayeleigh lay on the ground in front of them with her lap top open in front of her, wearing a black Cruxshadows shirt and black pants with purple chains. As she read the page on the computer screen, she was linking flowers together in a crown stopping every once in a while to scroll down the page or adjust her thick purple rimmed glasses. "Stay awake Anna its only four o'clock if you fall asleep now you won't sleep tonight" rogue said with a smile his purple eyes shining with were outlined in black khol like his sisters. As Annabelle’s body went limp, Rogue exhaled deeply and laid her softly on the pale green grass. Fayeleigh looked over to her, with her voice quiet and soft she whispered “Is Anna going to be all right?” Her voice trembling “I hope so Faye, but I just don’t know” he said and the two siblings went back to silence until a scream pierced through the silence. Rogue laid down his book and Fayeleigh closed her laptop and the siblings went out onto the road through the red painted fence. On the floor were two people. A girl, wearing a black Nirvana sweatshirt and baggy black jeans. She had long flowing hair the color of night. This was Thorn, daughter of the deceased and friend of the shadows. Thorn lived on her own in an apartment on the far east side of Eladore. She is quiet and mysterious and everyone is confused on whom this lonely dark girl really is. Thorn has almost totally distanced herself from people and her only escape from the sad life of which she lives is the heart wrenching, fearful, Across from the girl was a young man, who was breathing heavily out of fear. “What if they find out?” he thought bitterly to himself. The boy was in a plain black hoodie with the hood covering his hair and part of his long hair cam through the side of the hood, it was wavy and dark brown, slightly messy. He wore black dark wash blue jeans and army boots. This, though no one knew was Thorn’s cousin Cery. Prince Cery, heir to the thrown of Eladore to be exact. He hated being prince, no one treated him the same. And his least favorite word ever ‘sir’ was all that he ever heard. Cery longed for friendship and fun, but all he ever gets to do is read and sometimes sneak in some time playing guitar. Running into Thorn was actually his first time out of the palace and courtyard is more than nine months. “Oh I’m sorry I didn’t mean to run into you” Cery said his voice weak sounding and scared “S̀fine” Thorn replied biting on her lip “Are you two all right?” Rogue asked playing with one of the spiked which came down into the front of his face to which as a reply both Thorn and Cery nodded. “Why don’t you two come inside and I fix that?” Fayeleigh said gesturing to a cut on Cery’s arm, where blood was coming through the sleeve. He lifted up the sleeve of the sweatshirt to see a large gash where a rock on the floor had hit his arm “Oh um” he said not really wanting to but was cut off my Fayeleigh who added “If you don’t, I’ll eat you” Her voice still quiet not noticing how odd that might sound to someone who didn’t hear it as often as her. Cery just nodded looking carefully at the cut on his arm and slowly rose to his feet. Rogue then looked to Thorn as extended his hand. She took his hand and stood up. Then she looked from Rogue to Fayeleigh and shrugged. “Come on in” Rogue said leading the two through the gate and into the yard picking up his and handing Fayeleigh her laptop. “Lets leave her out here, she’ll be fine” Fayeleigh commented looking down to Annabelle who was still laying just as Rogue had laid her. Rogue looked down to her and nodded then led the three into the house, by opening a purple door, that led into a red painted hall which had drawing framed on the walls and paintings done directly onto it. Rogue and Fayeleigh then led Cery and Thorn into the living room. The walls were half purple and half black and there was a purple piano in the corner. Also in the room there were two couched and a paisley chain. Rogue said down on the chair and Thorn on one of the couches. Cery sat down on the floor next to Fayeleigh on the blood red carpet. Fayeleigh took his arm looking at the cut carefully and putting her hand over it. Cery winced slightly wondering what, exactly, was this stranger doing to him, but before he could ask Fayeleigh took her hand away and the cut was gone. She looked carefully at his arm and looked closely at where the cut used to be. His pale skin was now completely healed and there wasn’t even the smallest mark. “That was unbelievable thanks” Cery said still in shock not even noticing his hood fell back for a second, he would have freaked out but realized that no one noticed him. “No problem” Fayeleigh replied quietly “Are you two are aware you just let two perfect strangers into your house and you don’t find that weird?” Thorn said “And you name is?” Rogue asked looking over to her “Thorn” she said simply, her voice quiet almost a whisper and she just sat there biting down on her lip “Cery” he added softly looking down at the non-existent cut on his arm “And I’m Fayeleigh, guy is Rogue and my si-” Fayeleigh started and was about to tell them Annabelle’s name but was cut off my Thorn choking. “R-r-r-r-rogue?” she asked looking at him carefully “Hair, looks, clothes, name, I bet he has the voice too” Thorn thought to herself “Yeah that’s me, now don’t get me confused to the amazing Rogue of Cruxshadows of course” he said with a small smile. “Rachel?” She asked looking over to Fayeleigh who just looked away, trying not to smile. “You guys can’t be serious, I mean Cruxshadows is one of the most amazing goth rock bands out there, and this is Eladore, nothing ever happens in Eladore, not even in the oh so special top secret government” Cery said before covering his mouth “Seems we all have our secrets, prince” Fayeleigh said looking from Rogue to Cery with a small smile now realizing that he was the prince of Eladore. The four of sat and talked, mostly about Cery being prince and how much he hated it. And for a while they talked about Cruxshadows, but Rogue and Fayeleigh never outrightly said that they were in the band. Then for just a few seconds everything was silent. “Do you two want to come to a Cruxshadows concert with us on Saturday?” Rogue asked suddenly, looking from Cery to Thorn. His voice changed, it was no longer quiet and soft with a hint of nervousness. It was now excited, free of the fear it usually held. “What!?” Thorn almost screamed, leaving her quiet and fearful voice behind. Rogue went to start again but Thorn held up her hand. “I heard you” she added “So what do you say?” He asked looking to Thorn, who nodded, and then to Cery. He sat uncomfortably biting his lip, then nervously he nodded his head slightly. So for the next three days until Saturday, Thorn, Cery, Rogue, Fayeleigh, and Annabelle all spent almost all of their time together. Everyday Thorn would leave her very small apartment and go over to the black hour in the center of town and Cery would sneak out of the castle to see his friends. The five would hang out and talk, play music together, or be real nerds and play White Wolf or Magic. That was, until Saturday morning. The crowd of hundreds was spaced out over a large area but still crushed together, cheering loudly, as the words, “And here are The Cruxshadows,” rang over the speaker. The stage was pitch black, and all that you saw was the white smoke coming off it. Then the smoke started to clear, finally making the stage visible. Rogue lie on the floor in the front of the stage. His hair was looking better done that usual. Most of the hair came up perfectly and the pieces that didn’t, hung expertly around his painfully thin face. His unbelievable purple eyes were thinly outlined in black eyeliner. He wore a black long sleeve shirt that was slightly baggy and was studded with pyramid spikes. He also wore black fabric shorts which were also studded with pyramid spikes as where the many fabric chains which came off the shorts. On his feet he wore black cyber boots, the synthetic fabric shined slightly but the polished silver buckles shined brightly in the night. As soon as he was visible the whole crowd went silent. And then the rest of the band came into view. Fayeleigh, known by her fans as Rachel, held her violin close to her chin ready to play the first notes of the first song in the set. Her crimped, flowing, dark purple hair was down, just hanging loosely over her shoulders. She wore a black skirt that went a few inches above her knees with black and purple striped tights. She also wore a purple and black corset, the whole corset, which had two three-quarters of and inch sleeves, was almost all black except for the front panel which was a dark purple crushed velvet. She had on black boots which went a little more than half way to her knees and were laced up with purple and red ribbons. She wore purple framed rectangular sunglasses which covered her eyes and a small amount of purple lipstick. Shadow, also known by his name George, stood on the side of the stage behind his Yamaha keyboard. His short blue hair was done as usual, in small spikes. He wore a yellow and black stripped long sleeve shirt and a black tee shirt over it that said, ‘Oh my goth! Can I have a hug?.” He also wore plain black jeans that had purple and red chains coming off of them. He had on black boots that could barely be seen under his pants but one of the buckles reflected the light of the moon. He smiled weakly down into the keys of his keyboard. Sora, who was known as Stacey to anyone who listened to The Cruxshadowsm, stood on the opposite side of the stage. She wore a black dress that went to her knees and has a square cut top that was so long that it covered her 19th century style boots. Her blood red hair flew behind her with stray hairs hanging in her face. She held her black electric guitar carefully ready for the set to begin. She wore electric blue eyeliner and had circular sunglasses on her head. She smiled slightly looking out into the crowd. On either side of the stage was a dancer. On the left there was Holly. She had lightly brown hair which was put in small buns all over her head. She wore a black Cruxshadows tee shirt which was cut off just above the navel and a short black and a red plaid skirt. Sarah, who was on the right side of the stage looked almost identical right down to the massive amounts of black eyeshadow, except for her hot pink dread falls. Then suddenly piercing violin notes rang through the area and the crowd screamed realizing they were going to play Deception. The music was shockingly loud, the lyrics striking. Rogue’s voice was a voice that would never leave your head. The voice was distant and creepy, his voice going from monotone to a voice overflowing with emotion. Against the will of security, Rogue liked to get face to face with the audience. So, just staying true to himself, Rogue jumped off the stage and over the gate, which was holding the people back, and into the audience. The people separated to one side or the other making an isle for him to go through and then closing
the isle behind him.
His darkwave set voice rang through the whole area. The people he walked past were all probably extremely noticeable by their outrageous hair, clothing, and makeup. He went through many beautiful heartfelt songs such as Love and Hatred, Citadel the Iris remix, Cassandra, Deception, Here comes the Rain again, Dragonfly, Winterborn, Children in black and the amazing close to the show in a breathtaking version of Foreverlast. As Rogue jumped back onto the stage the crowd erupted into applause and screaming. “See you all again soon” Rogue yelled going off the stage. Out came Annabelle who wheeled over to him in her wheelchair, and over came Cery and Thorn hugging them all. The seven kids, ranging from age fourteen-years-old to seventeen-years-old went into the lounge where they all sat down. The walls were all painted sumptuous purple and had a detailed border in red and black. There were two couches, one black and one red and black chairs. They all took seats around the room and looked at each other. “Languid waves of desperation fall before the rains” Fayeleigh said “And I will write her name and cast it to the sky” rogue quoted hugging Annabelle, his youngest sister.
“We shall save this victory without surrender or defeat” Annabelle said talking about her illness. Having Cystic Fibrosis and being fourteen already she knew she wasn’t going to be alive much longer, but wouldn’t give up. “But the rain descends to snatch the light from distant dying suns” Cery said leaning against Fayeleigh who had become like a sister to him. “Don’t ask me to surrender” Sora said tiredly leaning against her best friend Shadow playing lazily with his blue spikes. “Her voice fell tired a spent” Shadow she smiling, not only finishing the quote but actually talking about how Sora was acting. “All the love and all the hatred” Thorn said showing a small smile which rarely crossed her cold dark face. “Minus the hatred of course” she finished “Friends...this is odd” Rogue said “But a lot of fun” Thorn said in disbelief, her first real friends, but they were also on a poster in her room right over her bed. “Hey, there has to be a first time for everything right” Cery said “But hey we must do what we always do after a show” fayeleigh said and in about ten minutes all seven of then were asleep.
THE END
